Fall Message from the President...

Hello SDCA members and welcome to a brand new year!

For those of you who don’t know me, I am Cindy Goehring, LPC-MH. I run a private practice in Aberdeen called Breakthrough Psychological Services and I am really excited to be your SDCA President for the next twelve months! The 2017-2018 year has already kicked off with a bang and we have some exciting news to share with our membership. Before I get to that, I want to let you know that we are trying out several new processes and programs this year and we vitally need your feedback to let us know if they’re a hit or a flop. We are planning to send out SHORT surveys that you can complete for just a couple of minutes of your time in order to get the best feedback possible.

Here are a couple of new things we’d like your opinion on when they are launched:

  • We’ve put together some webinars that we will be offering to our members for free CEs. You’ll receive the links for these in the email we have on file with your SDCA Membership. Please remember to update these as you change jobs, graduate, or retire.
  • We are in the process of creating an App for easier access to SDCA information, conference information, government relations activities, and much more. This is gradual process that may take some time but our volunteer board members are working diligently to get this up and going as soon as we can.
  • We’re changing your membership renewal process so that when you renew, your enrollment will be for one year from your date of renewal as opposed to the old way of each membership going from July 1st to June 30th regardless of when you sign up.
  • We will be adding some video messaging both through email, the website, and our social media sites for our shorter messages such as President Updates, Legislative Updates, Save the Dates, etc.

We hope all these upgrades will make your membership experience more pleasant and efficient. Thank you in advance for completing the surveys to let us know what you think.

The 2017-2018 SDCA Executive Board, Committee Chairs, and Members is almost full. We are still looking for SDCA members to assist with special projects and also to my chagrin, I am still looking for a partner to be the President Elect. My job as President is to teach and guide my successor throughout the year so that when they are ready to take the gavel, there is no fear and only total confidence going into that position. There are so many wonderful and fulfilling benefits to leading our state’s counselors that I wish everyone could have this opportunity. If you are interested, please contact me at sdca.counseling@gmail.com.

On a more upbeat note this year’s theme is The Magic of Music.

Music is a part of the human experience throughout our lifetime. It is sung to us as lullabies when we are babies, used to teach us language with the ABC song as toddlers, played when we celebrate our graduations, weddings, holidays, and even played as we celebrate the end of our life at our funerals. Music can change our mood, make us remember happy or sad event, make us laugh, and make us cry. Humans are drawn together on the street or in massive concert halls to experience the emotion and stories a musical performance can bring. Whether it’s Rock, Pop, Bluegrass, Jazz, Classical, Hip-Hop, Polka, or the thousands of other genres of music, humans are hard-wired to respond to music in a way that brings people together like nothing else that exists on the planet. Everyone has their own tale to tell of how music plays a part in their work or their personal life. How has music been magic for you? Share your story at sdca.counseling@gmail.com.

2017-2018 Strategic Plan: The board met in June and created the next three year Strategic Plan. There are some exciting plans in store!

Emerging Leaders Program: Our former President, Erin Meyer successfully established our Emerging Leaders Program and this continues to thrive into the new year. This new program pairs up experienced SDCA leaders with members who would like to be more involved. The former or current board members provide you with a mentorship experience before you have to dive in. LEARN MORE

Russell Barkley: On September 29, 2017, SDCA will be hosting Dr. Russell Barkley in Sioux Falls for a day of learning and experience with a world renowned expert in the area of ADHD. LEARN MORE

American Counseling Association ILT 2017: Our Government Relations Chair, Sarah Short Bull and I attended the ACA’s annual Institute of Leadership Training in Washington D.C. which consisted of a couple days of stimulating leadership training and then a day spent at Capitol Hill during open sessions. We were able to meet with our congress people and their staffers (Kristi Noem, John Thune, and Mike Rounds) to discuss current issues that are affecting our profession, our consumers, and our communities both on a national and local level at a time when the decisions are being made.

Midwest Regional ILT 2018: SDCA is proud to announce our application and proposal to host the next Midwest Regional Institute of Leadership Training was chosen by the Midwest Regional Counseling Association and so SDCA will be providing the 2018 Fall conference for all 13 states in the national region. Our guest will include leaders and association members from North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, and Oklahoma. More information will be on our website as the plan emerge.

Lastly, I just want to wish a warm Thank You and expression of appreciation to all of the counselors working hard every day to improve the lives of other human beings. What you do is truly remarkable!
