July Message from the President...
Hello SDCA members and welcome to a brand new year! I'm delighted and excited to be serving as your fearless leader for the next year and I can't wait to get started with our new strategic plan!
In June we held our annual SDCA retreat where board members and interested and upcoming leaders met for a two-day leadership training. We were able to develop our strategic plan for the next year and we have some very exciting things coming up! I would like to highlight a few areas of that plan.
One of most exciting announcements is that SDCA plans to bring internationally recognized Dr. Russell Barkley to Sioux Falls in 2017! Dr. Barkley is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina and has dedicated his career to researching and disseminating science-based information about ADHD. He is the author of 15 books and more than 180 scientific papers. Check out is website at www.russellbarkley.org for more information about his research, authored books, bio and lectures
We are excited to finally announce that Rebecca Christiansen has accepted the position of Executive Director. She has done a fantastic job serving as our interim ED and we are very lucky to have her continue to serve in the permanent role! Also, Dakota Plains Consulting Services has accepted the role as our bookkeeper and we are grateful to have a checks and balances system that is organized and compliant in order to manage our finances.
One goal for us this year is to facilitate some additional professional development opportunities for members including six-one hour webinars in which free CE's will be earned. If you have input on topics you would like to see email me at email@example.com. The board has also made the decision to continue with the online Zoom program. If anyone would like to hold meetings via distance we will provide that as an organization. Contact Rebecca for more information or if you would like to hold a meeting.
Another continued and important goal for SDCA as an organization is to increase involvement in advocacy. Our newsletter will continue to provide current information on legislative issues throughout the year via the SDCA website and through social media. Be sure to like us on Facebook and continue to check the website for updated information. We continue to plan for our annual Day on the Hill at the beginning of 2017 and look forward to attempting to visit with our legislators on issues concerning the counseling profession. Jessica Haefner will be heading up that committee so feel free to contact her at Jessie.firstname.lastname@example.org regarding legislative questions!
Increasing membership also continues to be a goal for SDCA. Make sure to renew your membership as July 1st was the start of the new fiscal year. We have updated the website to provide online registration and you can renew at www.sdcounseling.org. Also, be aware that we are looking at really vamping up our membership for South Dakota Native American Counseling Association which is an area of specialty for our Native American counselors as well as any member who works with the population. This is a very exciting area as we are the only state who offers it as a specialty!
Lastly, we are getting pumped up to host our annual SDCA conference back in Sioux Falls this year at the Ramkota! We look forward to increasing the number of qualified programs and sessions to maximize the amount of CE's offered. Stay tuned for updates soon on Pre-conference and Keynote speaker announcements!
Again, I look forward to providing more information on our up and coming goals. If you are interested in seeing more of the upcoming strategic plan it will be posted on our website and please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns!
