May Message from the President...

The lovely month of May is here! For many of us, the school year is drawing to a close. For others, our offices get quieter as clients get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the summer months. May is a great month for SDCA as well. Conference is behind us and we start looking towards the transition to the next fiscal year and the incoming SDCA board, which will take place July 1st

The SDCA Conference was a smashing success!!! We had over 300 counselors attend our conference. The feedback about the featured keynote speakers and the breakout sessions was very positive. Thursday evening, we had our very first SDCA social, featuring music bingo and Karaoke. We had a terrific turnout and shared lots of laughs. Over the next week, we will be updating our website with all of our conference goodies. Speaking of goodies, Julia Cook, famed author and guest speaker, attended our conference and wrote a poem about the experience, which she shared at the Awards Banquet. I have attached a copy of her poem, which is very kind and thoughtful. While this conference may be hard to top, I know that the North Central Chapter is already laying the ground work for an awesome conference in Aberdeen next year. Mark your calendars! The dates are April 28-30th.

Stacy Solsaa, President Elect, is working hard to set up the SDCA Board for the 2015-2016 year. The term will start on July 1st. Currently, she has two positions open, Ethics Chair and Graduate Student Coordinator. If you would like more information on either of these positions, please email us at sdca.counseling@gmail.com. If you would like to be an active member of SDCA, but not sit directly on the board, please send me an email! We are always looking for volunteers to sit on committees and assist with workshops, conference planning, Day on the Hill, and various other activities.

The Board of Directors also met on April 22nd. They voted and the decision was made to form a committee to move forward with hiring an Executive Director for SDCA. This person would handle the accounting as well as do the event planning and newsletter. This committee, headed by our president elect, will come up with a job description as well as a timeline for hiring. If you would like to be a part of this committee, please email me
